Barry has catered, officially and unofficially, nearly every major event I've attended in the Upper Valley and never failed to impress me with yes, the delicious, inventive food which I think every other reviewer here has mentioned but also with a keen eye for the presentation of the food, a playful charm and focused humor in it's preparation and a real lust for making life itself fun.
We were beyond happy with the food and service at our wedding! Barry was awesome and even made up a new recipe for us when we requested a pork belly appetizer. Everyone was blown away by the food (months later and people are still talking about that meal) and Barry and his staff were very professional and friendly. Food was a big priority for our wedding and there couldn't have been a better choice than Barry! We can't recommend him enough.
So my advice is to use Barefoot Gourmet with the clear understanding that they are committed to your party until the very end and the above scenario should never happen at your affair.
Don't tuck him away in some back room if you hire his company to cater your event, trust me, you want your guests to see him at work, it's a joy to behold.
I had the fortune of having Barry cater a family weekend in 2008. His catering is divine. Not only did he become a part of our family, we all felt he become a part of ours. I've never met a caterer who had such passion for their craft. He's an amazing storyteller through his presentation and cooking. He made the BEST mussels and homemade bread I've ever had. Should you need a caterer in the Upper Valley area, pick Barry. Simply divine. Oh, and if you have a moment ask him about rugby!
My niece had a wonderful wedding in a pastoral setting under a large tent and used Barefoot Gourmet for the catering. The food was lovely and well presented. It was disappointing though to witness the cake cutting and serving being done 1 hour after the dinner started. This doesn't allow the party to flow and more importantly the coffee and cake is a sign of the party's end, and in my professional opinion, it shouldn't occur until an hour before the party ends.
But more disturbing was the fact that the staff proceeded to remove the white table cloths from the tables two hours into a 4 hour party. Exposing the dinner tables for what they were, picnic tables, and proceeding to turn the lovely tent setting into a barn. When confronted, the staff advised me that the "bride said it was OK". Well, as a wedding professional for over 30 years, I'm here to tell you that the bride should not ever have been asked if removing the table cloths before the party ends is OK!
It's the mark of any great artist -- Barry's food isn't just about him and his happiness, it's about crafting an experience you share with everyone who shares it with you.
Barefoot Gourmet is the perfect complement to any special event. I have attended a number of his catered events in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire, and I have never been anything short of amazed. While his catering is a mainstay at many of the small and mid-sized events that I have attended with family and friends, the most impressive display that I've been lucky enough to witness has been at my own graduation party. Over 100 guests arrived wide-eyed to his enourmous outdoor grill setup, and everyone left stuffed, satisfied, and thoroughly impressed.
